Two years ago today, to the hour, I was a dozen miles into walking across the country. Seems like it’s been a much longer time, decades, especially looking back on my photographs and notes. Poring over them, all these forgotten fragments come back, sending me down further forgotten pathways of the past. Wondrous. It’s not a word I use often, but it fits here. What a beautiful year, and I continue to feel astonished by it. So this is a special day for me – a birthday – and if you’ve happened to drop by, I thank you so much for sharing it.
While I’m here, I figure it’s as good a time as any to announce some exciting news. Houghton Mifflin, the publishing house, picked up my book! I’m still reeling from the news, floating in this surreal dreamworld. Because that’s what this is: a dream come true. I feel totally humbled, crazy grateful, and a bit overwhelmed. Basically, I’m trying not to think a whole lot about it and just write the thing. I’ll be concentrating on the book full-time now, putting in everything I’ve got. If I can do justice to this story and all the people who made it with me, I’ll be happy.
Thanks for walking with me all this way. I’ll be in touch with periodic updates. Much gratitude, always.
